You’ve got the dream. The side project that could become your full-time thing. But between your 9-to-5, your social life, and that pile of laundry, it’s easy for your side-hustle to fall apart. You know the feeling: you open your to-do list, stare at it, and wonder where last week went. The good news? You don’t need more time. You need a review system.
The weekly review is the unsung hero of productive people. It’s not just about planning; it’s about closing the loop on the week that just passed. This is where you catch loose ends, celebrate wins, and reset your focus. Without it, you’re just guessing. With it, you move with intention.
Here’s my simple three-step weekly review that takes about 30 minutes. It works whether you’re using Notion, a paper planner, or a combination. And the best part? It’s designed for real life, not a productivity guru’s fantasy.
Step 1: Capture everything. Before you can review, you need to get everything out of your head and into your system. Spend 10 minutes writing down every task, idea, or worry that’s floating around. Don’t judge it, just capture it. If you use a Notion inbox, this is the time to process it. If not, a simple note on your phone works.
Step 2: Review your calendar and tasks. Go through the past week and ask: What did I actually get done? What didn’t I get to? Why? Be honest. Maybe you over-committed, or maybe you underestimated how long something would take. This isn’t about guilt; it’s about learning. Look at your upcoming week and block out time for your most important tasks. If you don’t schedule it, it won’t happen.
Step 3: Set your top three priorities for the week. Not ten things, not five. Three. These are the things that, if you do nothing else, you’ll feel good about. Write them down somewhere you’ll see them every day. In my Notion dashboard, I have a section for ‘Big Three’ that sits right at the top. It’s a constant reminder of what matters most.
Now, you might be thinking, ‘That’s it?’ Yes, that’s it. The magic isn’t in the steps, it’s in the consistency. When you do this every week, you build momentum. You start to see patterns. You realize that you’re not lazy—you just needed a system.
I know what it’s like to be in the thick of a busy week and think, ‘I don’t have time for a review.’ But I’ve learned that the review is what saves me time. It prevents me from spending hours on busywork that doesn’t move the needle. It keeps my side-hustle alive and growing, even when I’m tired.
So here’s my challenge to you: schedule your weekly review right now. Put it in your calendar for Sunday evening or Monday morning. Make it a date with yourself. Light a candle, make some tea, and spend 30 minutes with your dreams. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.
And if you’re looking for a good way to organize your reviews in Notion, I’ve created a template called the ‘Weekly Review Ritual’ that walks you through these steps with beautiful prompts. It’s part of my Life OS collection. But you don’t need it to start—a simple notebook works. The important thing is to start.
Your side-hustle deserves better than chaos. Your dreams deserve a system. Start with your weekly review, and watch what happens.
